Water Pipeline for Kayafungo in Kenya |
|
Location: Kenya
Amount Needed:$24,850
Benefits: This project will benefit 1,000 people.
In Kayafungo, Kenya, parasites and E. Coli are the largest killers of children under 5 in the region. Women are forced to walk over an hour each day during the dry season to collect water for their families. Children are required to leave school early to help collect water before sunset. The Kenya Water and Sanitation Project will construct a water pipeline and kiosk to bring clean water directly to the Gandini Primary School and the surrounding community. The organization will also construct latrines and hand washing stations at the school and will conduct health promotion workshops.
Facing The Problem
Unable to collect the recommended 20 liters of water per person, the people of Kayafungo regularly suffer from dehydration. Sadly, the water that they do collect is typically host to microorganisms. Parasite amoebas, E. Coli and other diseases live within the water that the people of Kayafungo collect every day. Most people suffer from stomach illness, diarrhea and waterborne diseases – the second biggest killer of children under 5 in the region.
